Dawg Patrol Outing No. 2,                                       Saturday, February 21, 2004

On Saturday, February 21, Greg Holland, Sam Abott and Adam Merry of the Dawg Patrol, hiked at Garrapata State Park.  It was a 3 mile hike, with 1,600 feet of elevation gain.  It took us 4 hours to complete the hike, but we stopped for lunch on the way.

It was a very nice hike. The first part was a very steep incline. It took us about 2 hours to get on top of the mountain.  On the way up we saw five rabbits and many birds.  The view of the coastline was superb all the way up.  Once, when we were about half way up, we stopped and had a snack at a point overlooking a redwood canyon with several clutches of trees.  Just before reaching the top of the mountain, we sat on a bench overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  We saw a freighter, some fishing boats and Yankee Point.  We didn’t see any whales.  Once on top of the mountain we hiked for another mile to the head of the redwood canyon.

We descended into Soberanes Canyon by running down the steep trail.  Once in the canyon we saw numerous ladybugs holding onto plants alongside the trail.  There were hundreds of them on a single stalk.  We ate lunch in the canyon beside Soberanes Creek.

All in all, it was great outing.  We discussed other outing ideas and concluded we would like to do an overnight campout for our next meeting.  Maybe hike in a short distance and pitch camp.  Dawgs, please email your comments to me at:  amerry@rlstevenson.org

Dawgs Patrol Outing  No. 1                                                       February 16, 2004

On Saturday, January 31, Thomas H., Grant R. and I went to see, at the State Theatre, The Perfect Score.  It was a good movie.  It was a comedy about these kids trying to steal the answers to the SAT’s.  They did, but one of them got caught in the end.  See the movie to see how it ends.

This was the Dawg Patrol’s first outing this year.  We plan to do two more this spring to earn the Baden Powel award.  Some ideas for other Patrol outings are as follows:  hike at Big Sur Garrapatta, campout at Indian Village in Pebble Beach, mountain bike/Go Ped ride at Ft. Ord or Pinnacles moon light hike and fire station merit badge (easy merit badge!).

Dawg Patrol, if you like these outing ideas, email your comments to me at: amerry@rlstevenson.org
